Place Matters: The Hawaiʻi Context
Research has shown that Native Hawaiians and Indigenous groups on the continent both experience historical trauma, the deep pain and sadness passed down through generations. However, less is known of the distinct differences in these experiences. By comparing existing health tools with local stories, the research team reveals the unique challenges tied to Hawaii's specific history with tourism, the military, and the high cost of living. The study found that while there are many shared experiences across Indigenous communities, local issues like environmental damage and housing are central to the Native Hawaiian experience.
This research highlights the need for new, culturally specific tools to accurately measure these impacts and better support community health. By focusing on cultural pride and restoring balance, these findings help guide the development of programs that truly honor and heal Native Hawaiian families.
